SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — After nine months of serving sick downstate Illinois children who needed swift helicopter rides to Springfield’s St. John’s Hospital for specialty care, the Saints Flight program has expanded to include adult patients.
Adults were added Aug. 3, and since then about 30 patients — half of them adults — have been brought to St. John’s, a Level 1 trauma center from hospitals throughout central and southern Illinois, St. John’s officials said.
“Now it’s a full-service program,” said Joe Rios, a flight nurse with 18 years of experience. “We can transport pretty much everyone now.”
