New Orleans — Toni A. Mitchell, MD, MBA, FACEP, FACP, an emergency physician and clinical professor of medicine in Florida, has received the James D. Mills Award for Outstanding Contributions to Emergency Medicine from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) during its annual meeting in New Orleans.
“Dr. Mitchell is an extraordinary person who has dedicated her life and skills to critical issues in emergency medicine, including health policy and the mentoring of women in emergency medicine,” said Dr. Brian Keaton, president of ACEP. “She has served at the national and state levels, always with energy and devotion.”
Dr. Mitchell is medical director and senior internal medicine physician at the Suncoast Community Health Centers Inc. in the Tampa Bay area. She also serves as clinical professor of medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of South Florida. She served on the ACEP Board of Directors from 1996 to 2002 and chaired several ACEP Committees, including Public Relations, Membership, Public Health and Ethics.
Dr. Mitchell was the first emergency physician to serve as chief of the medical staff at Tampa General Hospital. From 2000 to 2001, she served as health policy fellow for Oregon Senator Ron Wyden.
Dr. Mitchell received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center, her master’s degree from Memphis State University and her master of business administration degree from the University of South Florida.
