AUSTIN, Texas — In a recent weekly staff memo obtained by KXAN, the Austin-Travis County EMS chief wrote that personnel are fatigued and the department faces other challenges.

“Right now, we are facing a challenge to recruit, hire, and retain great people,” wrote Chief Ernesto Rodriguez. “We are also facing the challenge of work-related fatigue caused by shift work. We will face these challenges. We will find solutions. We will be better and stronger when we do.”

In the memo, Rodriguez also writes the department is working with an organization to develop a fatigue-management plan. However, critics say this has been an issue for years and needs to be addressed.
