SAN DIEGO — A young medic who lost a leg while serving in Afghanistan is now helping to prepare new recruits for the realities of war in a new role as an amputee actor.
Former Navy corpsman Joel Booth, 24, was attached to a Marine battalion as a naval combat medic when he stepped on an explosive in the Taliban stronghold of Sangin two years ago. His right leg was later amputated below the knee.
In spite of his ordeal — which saw him diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder — the young veteran offered to play a wounded soldier in ‘hyper realistic’ battle scenarios set up to help train Marine and Navy medics.
