OMAHA, Neb. — Cass County Emergency Management is testing out a first-of-its-kind program in Nebraska. EMS paramedics will now be assisting volunteer EMT’s on calls.

This is the first week the program is in effect, and the hopes are that the change will improve patient care on the scene of an emergency. Previously, the county only had volunteer EMT’s responding, and they were limited to what they were able to do and often had to resort to loading a patient in the ambulance and rushing to the hospital. The paramedics will be able to stabalize the patient on the scene.

“With the ALS, we can do advanced airways, we can provide any of the medications needed,” said Paramedic Chad Korte. “The same thing that they would do in the ER, in a cardiac arrest situation, we can intubate, push the drugs, and do basically anything they can do in an ER.”
