WHITEVILLE, N.C. — The head of Columbus County’s Emergency Medical Services announced Thursday that he is stepping down.

Dr. Fred Obrecht, the EMS medical director for eight years, delivered his resignation letter via e-mail. In it, Obrecht criticized the county’s emergency ambulance system and the county commissioners, whom he said met his efforts to reform the system with silence.

Obrecht’s letter did not say when he would step down.
