CHICKASAW COUNTY, Miss. — An EMT was killed after an 18-wheeler crashed head-on into an ambulance Tuesday night.

Michael Collums, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. His colleague, Raymond Reed, 51, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, report WCBI. They were responding to a call at the time of the crash.

Officials said the MedStat ambulance was traveling westbound and the semi was traveling eastbound when the crash occurred. A vehicle in front of the semi quickly slowed down once it saw the approaching ambulance; the semi driver then swerved into the ambulance’s lane to avoid crashing into the slowing vehicle.

“We have an accident reconstruction team on the scene,” Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Criss Turnipseed told the Chickasaw Journal. “We don’t have all the details at this time, and the accident is under investigation.”

We will update this story when more information is available.
