Texas county overhauls emergency service after scandal

BLANCO COUNTY, Texas — By November of last year, the Blanco Volunteer Ambulance Corps hit what was arguably its lowest point.

After nearly a year of scandals stemming from accusations that its previous director, Mark McMain, for years had taken opiate painkillers from ambulances, the nonprofit came close to losing its state license to provide emergency services to southern Blanco County. An administrative law judge — who recommended that McMain permanently lose his paramedic certificate — cited the corps management’s support for McMain as contributing to the problem.

The corps’ finances were in chaos, and the corps had lost the faith and trust of much of the community, officials now say.
