Okla. city drops volunteer EMS program

Glenpool’s new EMS provider said the national standard is that the fire department first responds to medical calls, followed by an ALS ambulance

GLENPOOL, Okla. — The city’s new EMS provider has decided to drop a longstanding volunteer medical first responder program, saying the fire department should be the first on the scene of emergency calls.

Ed Fowler, vice president of operations for Guardian Emergency Medical Services, which purchased Glenpool’s EMS Plus in November, said the national standard is that the fire department first responds on medical emergencies followed by advanced life support ambulatory service.

Eliminating the volunteer service would bring Glenpool up to the standard, Fowler said.
