PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — A St. Lucie County firefighter who took a man’s severed foot from the scene of a highway crash last year has been charged with misdemeanor theft, authorities say.
According to reports, Cindy Economou allegedly took the bodily remains to help train her cadaver dog in September 2008. She eventually resigned from the St. Lucie County Fire District.
Highway patrol officials said the severity of misdemeanor charges depends on the value of the item stolen, and that there is no law that specifically deals with body part theft.
Economou was released from jail on her own recognizance Monday.
According to a fire district spokeswoman, cadaver dogs are used to follow the scent of decomposing human flesh.
