NHULUNBUY, Australia — An emergency call operator cancelled an ambulance request for a man who later died of a drug overdose because the police system had categorised the job differently, a coronial inquest heard.

St John Ambulance officer Karen Joyner — who was responsible for dispatching ambulances that day — told an inquest into the death of Matthew Winsloe Hinton she was waiting for police to call to say the scene was safe.

When the officers at the scene had not called almost 30 minutes after a scared neighbour was assured an ambulance would be there “as soon as we can”, Ms Joyner deleted the case.
