ISLE OF WIGHT, England — A couple suffered injuries last night when they fell 30ft off a cliff edge on the Isle of Wight.
The man and woman- both in their 50s- were walking at about 7pm in Freshwater Bay near to the Albion Hotel when they fell.
The pair were taking a shortcut to a secluded beach for a romantic picnic, it is believed.
But a major search and rescue operation was sparked when they fell and Needles Coastguard teams including the emergency Rescue Helicopter 104, police and firefighters were all called to the scene.
They scaled down the cliff to rescue the pair.
The woman was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital after she suffered injuries to her hip, back, chest and arm.
The man hurt his finger and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transferred to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport by land ambulance.
The Coastguard said their rescue team trained especially in cliff rescue managed to get the couple to safety on Tennyson Down.
