SENECA, S.C. — A new memorial sits at the flagpole in front of the EMS Building at Oconee Medical Center honoring the men and women who answer the call when others are in need of medical attention.
The memorial was dedicated Tuesday night. “The Oconee County Emergency Medical Services, that we operate, has built a memorial to honor the memory of former EMS medics who had more than 10 years of service and who are now deceased,” said Heather Goss, the medical center’s marketing director.
The names of four former EMS medics are inscribed on brick pavers surrounding the memorial as the initial inductees. The names are those of Ray Corn, an EMS medic in Oconee County from 1966 to 1990; Slay Whitfield, who served from 1970 to 1980; Harley Chapman Sr., an EMS medic from 1981 to 2006; and Mike Wigington, who served from 1985 to 1995.
At the ceremony, family members and guests shared stories of their service in Oconee County.
“As part of the ceremony, we also made a special dedication of the EMS garage in the memory of Harley Chapman, who passed just a few years ago,” Goss said. “He was a very dedicated EMS medic and was also very helpful in performing maintenance on the vehicles there.”
State Sen. Thomas Alexander presented flags that have flown over the state capitol. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard raised the flags to fly over the campus of Oconee Medical Center.
