CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. — Dan Spiezio’s whirlwind trip to India and back started with an email from his wife.
Penny Spiezio had seen a request from a local group, Hugs for Heroes, looking for an emergency medical technician to volunteer to fly to India and escort a sick veteran from Buskirk home.
“I asked my wife if I should pass it on to the members of the squad, but she said, ‘No. I think you should do it yourself. You have vacation time coming,’ ” said Spiezio, a professional EMT and captain of the Cambridge Valley Emergency Squad. That led to contact with Linda Nichols of Wilton, a former Glens Falls social worker who is a member of the Patriot Guard, a group of veterans who ride motorcycles at funerals and support veterans and military families in other ways.
