CENTRAL CITY, La. — After spending several weeks in the hospital after being shot and run over while aiding a shooting victim, Daniel Wesley was welcomed home last week.

Wesley, 17, attempted to save a shooting victim while he was returning home from a shopping trip — he was run over and shot twice by the suspect. Wesley underwent several surgeries; his arm was shattered in 18 places and he broke his femur.

“Daniel was shot in the arm, the leg, and luckily, they both went straight through,” Wesley’s mother, Kathy, told WBRZ.

Following the incident, Wesley’s high school has raised $5,000 to help him with medical expenses.

“This is what this community is all about,” Sonna Soniat, a teacher at Central High School, said. “We come together when there’s a crisis and support one another.”

As Wesley arrived home Friday, he was embraced by his friends and his entire high school. Although he is using a cane to walk, he will be starting physical therapy in the coming months.

“God bless Daniel, we’re thankful he’s home,” Central High Principal David Prescott said.
