COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — More than two years after being shot 14 times, a firefighter-paramedic is returning to duty.
Eddie Baker was shot outside his home by his neighbor December 2014; he suffered gunshot wounds to his chest, spine and arm. He also suffered a broken femur, jaw, shoulder and seven broken fingers.
Baker was told that he would most likely never return to work, but he was determined to return to the station regardless.
“I would always ask is there ever going to be a chance where I will be able to get back to the fire department and they always told me no and it was heartbreaking every single time,” Baker told FOX 5 Atlanta.
The 11-year veteran spent two years in rehab and learned to walk again. Baker said his faith, supportive colleagues and family members were integral to his recovery.
“Everyone donated probably over two years of vacation time to him, so he did not miss a check while he was out,” College Park Fire Chief Wade Elmore said. “He is a model employee, so I would say he means a whole lot to us.”
