SANDY HOOK, Ky. — An EMS station was severely damaged after an overnight fire.

WKYT reported that firefighters battled the blaze at the Elliot County EMS station for more than two hours, resulting in one firefighter being transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and exhaustion. The firefighter is expected to make a full recovery.

Officials said around five or six people, including EMS providers and dispatchers, were in the building at the time, but no one was hurt.

Crews managed to move three ambulances away from the fire before they were damaged, but Elliot County emergency management director Jim Skaggs said the building is a loss.

Dispatchers are now working out of a garage, and responders said they have their work cut out for them.

“It’s going to be tough. They’re going to have to reorganize, find another temporary housing for our ambulance service and our dispatch at this time,” Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Michael Dickerson said.

Skaggs assured the community that emergency services will not be interrupted.

“We can take sick people to the hospital. We can answer those emergency calls, but it’s the admin things that we deal with ... the loss of paperwork, equipment, computers ... that makes it harder,” Skaggs said.
