Fla. EMS director, radio show host spend hour in hot car

They were prepared with equipment and medical staff on standby to demonstrate danger of being left inside a vehicle in the heat

TAVARES, Fla. — Lake County EMS Director Jerry Smith joined WLBE 790AM radio show Ralph Smith to host an hour-long show – inside a hot EMS car.

They parked in the lot the Tavares Waffle House at 1 p.m. to demonstrate the danger of being left inside a vehicle in the heat, Bay News 9 reports.

They came prepared with blood pressure and body temperature monitors, and medical staff were on standby in case their core body temperatures reached 104 degrees and they suffered heat stroke.

The weather turned out be 75 degrees and overcast, but still the temperature inside the car rose eight degrees in less than an hour.

“It was hot,” Jerry Smith said. “I’ll do it again if we have to but I prefer not to.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 32 children died in 2012 after being left alone in a hot car.
