BEDFORD, Mass. — One person was critically injured and four more were also hurt after a wall fell on several workers at a construction site at a Bedford home, Fire Chief Paul Sheehan and Police Chief John Fisher reported.

First responders found the workers trapped under a wall when they arrived at 61 Dunster Road around 7:35 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23. A bystander was providing first aid to the workers as well, officials added.

All five people were taken to area hospitals for treatment. One person sustained life-threatening injuries, officials said. A Bedford firefighter was also treated for injuries onsite.

Several neighbors told MassLive they did not hear any noise from the incident, including people living at the house across the street. Most people were unaware that something had happened until the ambulance arrived.

The Bedford Building Inspector believed that improper construction techniques could have caused the incident, according to officials. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating and will determine a final cause.
