CHATSWORTH, Ga. — A nurse, doctor and firefighter — all off duty at the time — are being credited with saving a man’s life after he collapsed while hiking.
Firefighter Doug Kerns, Dr. Brad DeLay and nurse James DeLong were mountain biking when they saw David Jones collapse on a section of a trail last weekend.
DeLong and DeLay began CPR while Kerns called 911; a park ranger was already notified of the incident when Kerns went to retrieve an AED.
“It’s extremely rare to go into cardiac arrest like that outside of a hospital and have a good outcome,” DeLong told Goshen News. “He’s a lucky dude.”
Jones was transported to the hospital, where he had four stents put in; he is expected to fully recover.
“It wasn’t his time to go that day,” Kerns said. “What are your chances that you have a doctor and a registered nurse and a firefighter and two people that knew CPR show up on an off-duty call all at the same time?”
