TOWN OF ARCADIA, Wis. — Authorities on Monday said that 13 people, including five children, two emergency medical technicians and a sheriff’s deputy, were overcome by carbon monoxide Sunday when a charcoal grill was used inside a home in Trempealeau County.

Dispatchers received a call late Sunday afternoon about an unknown medical condition at a home at N28324 Rainey Valley Road in the town of Arcadia. First responders found five adults and five children suffering from the effects of carbon monoxide. Some were unconscious.

Three helicopters and five ambulances were dispatched to the scene to transport the injured.

Authorities said a police officer and two EMTs who responded also were overcome and were treated and released from a local hospital.

Investigators said it appears the occupants were using the grill in the kitchen for heat after running out of LP gas. The incident remains under investigation by the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department.
