DANVILLE, Ill. — A paramedic had his head shaved by a cancer survivor whom he cared for five years ago to raise money for others who need treatment.
Illinois Homepage reported that paramedic Cody Carpenter has stayed in contact with Tanner Haurez, 9, ever since he transported him two and a half hours to get treatment for leukemia in 2013.
“Cody was Tanner’s EMT that took him to St. Louis from Carle in Champaign when he was diagnosed,” Tanner’s dad said. “He took him in, made him comfortable for the ride and kind of the beginning of the journey.”
After meeting Tanner, Carpenter drove hours to the hospital multiple times to encourage Tanner through treatment.
“To follow their journey was spectacular,” Carpenter said. “It’s a scary moment, and to be able to take care of somebody and their child is such a humbling opportunity.”
Tanner, who is now in remission, is raising money for others who need treatment through Team Tanner with various events including shaving Carpenter’s head.
The money raised through Team Tanner will go toward childhood cancer research and treatment.
