PORTLAND, Maine — An ambulance company accused of falsely billing Medicare for unnecessary patient transports has agreed to pay $825,000 in a settlement.
Associated Press reported that North East Mobile Health Services and Maine Medical Center were charged with violating the False Claims Act by falsely claiming patients were “bed confined”
and required transportation, according to federal prosecutors.
“Although North East Mobile Health Services continues to deny that all the transports were not medically necessary, North East Mobile Health Services has agreed to repay the claims, the cost of which is less than defending a lawsuit,” the company said in a statement.
Main Medical Center is also settling and will pay $600,000.
