DELAWARE COUNTY, Ohio — A dispatcher has been credited with helping a couple deliver their newborn daughter as she provided guidance over the phone.
Dispatcher Catherine Dobyn received a 911 call from Brian Baertsche Jan. 10, who said his wife was going into labor.
“We’re having a baby — right now,” Baertsche told Dobyn.
Baertsche’s wife, Khandice, had previously gone to the hospital twice, but was sent home, reported the Columbus Dispatch.
Several minutes after placing the call, Baertsche delivered the baby with Dobyn’s help. She instructed the new father to keep the baby close to her mom, clear her nose and mouth and cover the infant with blankets.
“And do not cut or pull on the [umbilical] cord,” Dobyns told Baertsche. “We’re going to let the medics deal with that.”
Dobyn said it was the first time she’s helped delivery a baby over the phone.
“It’s cool,” Dobyn said. “I’m the first person that gets to congratulate them.”
