BATON ROUGE, La. — After 17-year-old EMT student Daniel Wesley put his life on the line to save a shooting victim, he had the opportunity to meet the doctor who helped treat him.
Wesley was driving home with his mother from a shopping trip when he saw April Peck, 30, lying on the side of the road. When he got out to render aid, he was shot and run over by Terrell Walker. Although Peck did not survive, Wesley has been hailed as a hero for attempting to help.
Last week, Wesley met Dr. Randall Cornateanu, a paramedic who was also driving home the day of the incident. As he watched the scene unfold, Cornateanu said he pulled over after shots were fired.
“I see the kid [Wesley] on the floor. My first instinct at that point was ‘I need to help,’” Cornateanu told WBRZ. “I didn’t even think of any potential danger.”
Cornateanu treated Wesley until EMS arrived on scene; he visited Wesley at the hospital last week. “It’s funny because the first rule in first aid is ‘make sure your situation is safe before you go in and help.’ And Daniel and I both failed that first rule,” Cornateanu said.
“He came and visited me Monday night, and I said, ‘Hey I remember you,’” Wesley said. “I don’t know why I specifically remembered him.”
