WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Doctors are split in a decision of whether or not a man who is accused of killing two Florida paramedics in a crash last June is fit to stand trial.

Genaro Ajqui’s lawyers told a judge last month that two doctors deemed him incompetent, but a doctor who was ordered by the judge to give a third opinion disagreed on the decision, according to WPTV.

Ajqui is accused of driving under the influence and crashing into an ambulance, resulting in the death of paramedics Lahiri Garcia and Paul Besaw.

The third doctor did not specify a reason for the disagreement, but another hearing was ordered by the judge to assess all three opinions and go over Ajqui’s medical records to finally determine if he is fit for trial.

Besaw’s widow, Dawn, said she does not like the possibility of Ajqui being placed in a mental health facility if he is deemed incompetent.

“Some of those people stay in those mental health facilities for years and it never goes to trial,” Dawn said. “Nothing is ever going to bring Paul back. But just to know that this is wrapped up and done, we can move forward in healing.”

The next hearing is scheduled for May 2.
