PHILADELPHIA — The owner of a defunct Northeast Philadelphia ambulance company was sentenced to 10 months in prison for making false statements to Medicare, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced.

Bassem Kuran, 23, of Philadelphia, and the sole owner and President of VIP Ambulance Inc., pleaded guilty in June to submitting false bills to Medicare for patients his company did not transport. He also submitted bills for patients who were not eligible for ambulance transport under the Medicare requirements.

U.S. District Court Judge Gerald J. Pappert also sentenced Kuran to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay more than $66,000 restitution, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office
