CHARLESTON, WV — Dispatchers say a tractor-trailer that jackknifed on the West Virginia Turnpike crashed through a guardrail and was hanging over Kanawha City.
Responders pulled the tractor-trailer back onto the highway and cleared the scene by 9:30 p.m. Monday.
Kanawha Metro 911 dispatchers said a tractor-trailer box-style truck heading north on Interstate 64/77 crashed through a guardrail just before the Yeager Bridge about 8 p.m. The truck’s cab was lying on its side over the hillside.
The driver was not injured. The truck was heavily damaged in the crash and dispatchers said diesel fuel was leaking from one of the trucks fuel tanks. Emergency crews at the scene reported debris strewn across the road.
Dispatchers reported two additional crashes occurred in traffic leading up to the wreck. Both were rear-end crashes and one involved a second tractor-trailer.
One person was injured in one crash and no injuries were reported in the second crash.
Dispatchers said one lane had been closed in both directions.
Charleston police and firefighters were at the scene with State Police.
Authorities are asking motorists to avoid the area if possible.
