Philadelphia’s EMS system in critical situation

The Philadelphia fire department is struggling with a manpower shortage and limited resources in the emergency medical response team.

The Philadelphia EMS system is in critical condition as it makes 200,000 medical run each year, the vast majority involving non-life threatening issues. One squad had 22 calls out of the station late today. Two years running, it’s been the busiest ambulance in the nation. The International Association of Firefighters said the Philadelphia EMS system is in a continuing crisis operating with 40 percent fewer ambulances and paramedics that big cities call for.

“They are understaffed, under budgeted and under funded and it’s affecting the citizens of Philadelphia.”
