Pa. EMS loses second chief in six months

Departure could mean hiring emergency medical technicians to cut costs

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Allentown Emergency Medical Services will lose its second manager this year as nearly one-third of the positions in the ambulance department remain unfilled and the future of the department is uncertain.

Manager Joel Calarco, who emailed paramedics last week to tell them of his resignation, said he has accepted a position with Lehigh Valley Health Network. His June 8 departure has current staff worried that might mean the end for his proposal to keep Allentown EMS staffed only with paramedics, instead of opting to hire some emergency medical technicians to cut costs.

Mayor Ed Pawlowski said Calarco took the reins during a difficult transition for EMS and offered a blueprint for its future.
