LEXINGTON, Ken. — A man suffering from severe chest pains went to a Lexington fire station for help Wednesday, only to find it was closed.
The man called 911 from station 15 at Shillito Park and waited about eight minutes for crews from another station to respond. EMS took the man to the hospital. There was no information released on his condition.
The city closes some fire stations at certain times to save money.
The Lexington Fire Department union president issued a statement criticizing the brownouts. He says the city refuses to put up signs indicating when a station is closed because, “they know they are wrong.”
Lexington Fire Department Lt. Chris Bartley says it’s not unusual to have people come to a fire station seeking help.
“It could be a lot worse. We’ve had some people pull up where people are dying and actually in cardiac arrest, or an active seizure, or active delivery of a baby. I mean, we’re also a Safe House. We’ve had people who’ve been assaulted that come up to the station. They know that usually somebody is here if that fire truck is here,” he said.
