Commuter train accident leaves 15 hurt in Boston

BOSTON — A commuter train has collided with a bumper at the end of a track in Boston, leaving 15 riders with minor injuries.

Fire department spokesman Steve MacDonald said 15 to 20 people were being treated for minor injuries Tuesday.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the train from Worcester was entering South Station at a “very low rate of speed” when it hit the rubber bumper and stopped suddenly. He said some people standing next to exits fell.

Pesaturo said the engineer told investigators he was mistaken about the train’s length, and that caused him to misjudge the distance to the end of the platform.

Pesaturo said distractions such as cell phone use or texting were not factors. The engineer will be tested for alcohol and drugs.
