WEST MILTON, Ohio — Officials said about 40 Milton-Union Middle School students were treated by emergency medical services after ingesting ghost peppers. West Milton emergency crews were called to the middle school at 12:06, where police said the students had eaten the peppers voluntarily.
The 911 caller reported that one child who ate the pepper broke out in a rash and had trouble seeing, and two other students vomited. Of the 40 students who ingested the pepper, five were taken to the hospital.
“The response of emergency services was amazing; deputies and help from surrounding paramedics … we really had a lot of help here this afternoon,” District Superintendent Brad Ritchey told the Dayton Daily News.
School officials have identified the student who brought the peppers to school, but haven’t said whether the student will face any consequences.
“This was serious,” said Ritchie, “but sometimes situations at schools become far more serious than this.”
