KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Knoxville Area Transit driver Monday morning apparently suffered a fatal medical condition causing her to slam her vehicle into a utility pole before stopping in an East Knoxville parking lot.
Knoxville Police Department Capt. Gary Holliday said Lisa M. Patrick, 49, of Holston Drive died after emergency responders removed her from the 2007 Ford F350 bus.
Holliday said the crash occurred about 6 a.m. near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Olive Street. The KAT bus is one of the smaller vehicles outfitted with a lift for wheelchairs.
The bus was not carrying any passengers at the time. Holliday said the eastbound bus was just beginning its route when the crash occurred.
The KPD captain said Patrick bore no signs of trauma. Police said she suffered a medical issue but are awaiting an exact determination by the Knox County Medical Examiner’s offi ce.
“The driver veered off the road and sideswiped a metal pole and came to rest in a parking lot,” Holliday said. The bus stopped in the parking lot at 2112 Magnolia Ave.
Patrick had been employed by KAT since Aug. 15, 2005, according to Belinda Woodiel-Brill, director of marketing and development with KAT.
Woodiel-Brill said Patrick had a mandated physical March 15. The annual physical is required by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
