Patient’s death prompts review of ambulance transports

The review comes after a patient fled an ambulance and was later hit by a car

ST. JOHNS, Newfoundland and Labrador — Following the death of a mentally ill patient who fled an ambulance, a Canadian healthboard is examining whether health professionals or relatives should be required for future patient transfers.

Eastern Health issued a statement Wednesday saying it has finished a review of the death Riley Anderson Fowlow who left an ambulance while pulled over on a highway in September, according to CTV News.

The ambulance had to pull over when Fowlow became agitated. After running away, the patient was hit by a car.

The board’s review of the incident said that medics did nothing wrong and met the standard of care, but suggested looking at whether health professionals or relatives should travel with similar patients during transfers.
