DETROIT — An ambulance and police car were both hit with a flying object that shattered the two windshields, according to officials.

Click on Detroit reported that the object, which police believe was a tire, first hit the Wayne County Community College police cruiser, and then bounced into an ambulance that was driving behind the officer’s vehicle.

“I was driving on the freeway, and just off the side of the road, it’s like somebody tossed a tire out into the freeway,” the off-duty officer said. “I was startled.”

The officer said he thinks the tire came from the side of the freeway, and the impact sent shattered glass flying onto the highway.

“Courageously, they kept their calm,” Detroit police Capt. Darin Szilagy said. “They were able to get these vehicles over to the side of the road. It could have been a disaster, but they kept their calm and got the vehicles off the road safely.”

The object left a large hole in the driver’s side of the ambulance’s windshield, and the police cruiser’s windshield was completely shattered on the driver’s side.

No injuries were reported. Police found a SUV they believe to be where the tire came from, but the driver could not be located.

The incident is currently under investigation.
