NEW YORK — TransCare, a private ambulance company that participated in the 911 EMS system in New York, has filed for bankruptcy, forcing the FDNY to implement a contingency plan to deal with the loss of 27 ambulances.
TransCare had contractual agreements with seven hospitals in New York and operated ambulances in the Bronx and Manhattan. The company staffed a total of 81 ambulance tours daily.
FDNY had been aware for several months that TransCare was experiencing financial difficulties and had developed contingency plans in anticipation of a bankruptcy announcement.
The contingency plan, set to go into effect today, will include placing additional FDNY units into service and evaluating private hospital and third-party EMS providers to determine whether they will be able to help fill the void left by TransCare’s sudden absence.
