The coroner is investigating the death of Steve Phillips, 50, who died in the back of an ambulance after his partner tried to save his life

DARLINGTON, S.C. — Friends family and colleagues are mourning the death of Chesterfield EMS FirstHealth ambulance service Steve Phillips, 50, of Monroe, N.C., who died Tuesday after dropping off a patient at a hospital, wspa.com reports.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee is investigating the death.

Phillips and his partner transported a patient from Chesterfield General to McLeod Hospital in Florence County. They were on their way back to Chesterfield County when Phillips had a medical difficulty, Hardee said.

His partner attempted life-saving efforts, but was unsuccessful.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Stevie Phillips,” said Michael Hudson, EMS director for FirstHealth. “Stevie was a very talented paramedic … The entire EMS team and FirstHealth family send our sincerest condolences to Stevie’s family and friends.”

Phillips had been with FirstHealth since 2012.

Hardee said he plans to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
