Grateful family donates specialized ambulance

The ambulance is designed to carry critically ill toddlers and infants; the family made the donation after their son suffered head trauma from falling off of a scooter

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolinas HealthCare Foundation has received a $348,900 gift from the Elsie & Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation for a specialized ambulance for transporting critically ill infants and children under 8.

Michael and Kelly Hughes of Charlotte made the donation in response to the care their son William received at the Levine Children’s Hospital emergency department last year. William, then 5, had fallen off his scooter and suffered a head trauma, but he fully recovered with no permanent damage.

The Dekelboum foundation, based in Maryland, is named for Michael Hughes’ grandparents.
