BROCKTON, Mass. — A federal grand jury is investigating a city’s ambulance provide choice amid protests from EMS providers who say the contract was not properly awarded.
EMTs from AMR say a panel charged with reviewing proposed contracts recommended that the city rehire AMR, which has been providing the city’s ambulance service for 34 years, but Mayor Bill Carpenter chose Brewster Ambulance instead.
AMR employees have been picketing for weeks in protest of the decision.
FOX25 reports that the U.S. Attorney’s Office is now examining the decision through a federal grand jury investigation.
Fire Chief Michael Williams, one of the three city officials that served on the committee that reviewed the bids submitted for ambulance companies, said he was subpoenaed to testify.
FOX25 reports that contributions have been made to Carpenter’s campaign by Brewster Ambulance employees and family members, which Carpenter denied.
