361 Ind. Rural/Metro employees to be laid off

As operations close across the state, 84 are expected to lose their jobs by Sept. 30, and 277 by the end of the year

INDIANAPOLIS — As many as 361 Rural/Metro employees will be laid off when the company closes operations across Indiana.

Rural/Metro Corporation announced Monday it will end service to more than 30 communities across the state. ABC6 reports it will lay off 84 people in billing operations by Sept. 30. Another 277 layoffs are expected by the end of 2014.

The charges are due to the low number of transports in rural areas, changing health care and low Medicaid reimbursement rates, company officials have said.
