TARGHEE, Idaho — Twenty-eight students were unharmed after a Swan Valley School District bus was involved in an accident near Grand Targhee Resort on Monday afternoon.

The bus collided with a rented Subaru on Ski Hill Road two miles south of Targhee, said Cpt. Scott Terry of the Teton County, Wyo., Sheriff’s Office.

Terry said that while investigations are not complete, indications show the bus driver was not at fault in the crash. The accident was likely caused by the Subaru’s driver going too fast for road conditions, he said. Alcohol did not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash.

“The driver of the Subaru had to be extricated and was flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center,” Terry said. “He was in critical condition the last we heard.”

The name of the Subaru driver was withheld pending notification of the family.

None of the bus’ passengers was harmed, though the driver complained of some neck pain, Terry said. She was taken by a friend to Teton Valley Hospital in Driggs for evaluation.

The students were on their way to Targhee for a weekly ski school program, Swan Valley School District superintendent Craig Kunz said.

“It was unfortunate that this happened,” Kunz said. “We are glad none of our students were hurt.”

The students, who are in grades two to eight, were taken home on a bus from Idaho’s Teton County School District, Kunz said.
