SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A former EMT who witnessed a car crash rescued three passengers from the wreck on Thursday morning.

The vehicle crashed into a tree as former EMT Kevin O’Donnell was nearby working, killing the driver and injuring the three passengers, according to WWLP.

O’Donnell alerted neighbors to the crash, then used a hammer to smash a window and pulled the three unconscious victims out of the back with help from other good Samaritans. He also assessed each victim to make sure they were breathing.

O’Donnell said his past EMS training kicked in and helped him know how to react during the incident.

Police said the three crash survivors are expected to recover from their injuries, according to WWLP. A small memorial has been set up at the scene of the crash for the driver who was killed.
