HENDERSONVILLE, S.C. — A 12-year-old girl died Monday following an accident involving an all-terrain vehicle.

Colleton County Fire and Rescue crews responded to a house on Cavanaugh Road, south of Walterboro near the Hendersonville community, at 1:44 p.m., Director Barry McRoy said.

Witnesses told rescuers that some of the children attending a birthday party at the house were driving two all-terrain vehicles in the woods behind the house when one of the vehicles rolled over, critically injuring the girl and injuring the leg of another child, McRoy said.

The two children were taken to the house on the second ATV and people there called 911.

The girl was treated at the scene by firefighter-paramedics and then flown to Medical University Hospital. She was later pronounced dead there.

Her name has not been released.

The second child was taken by ambulance to Colleton Medical Center in stable condition, McRoy said.
