WILLIMANTIC, Conn. — A Connecticut man allegedly stole an ambulance from a hospital Tuesday before crashing it on hospital grounds.

Police say Jose Trujillo, 18, had been transported to Windham Hospital in Willimantic after being involved in a car crash earlier Tuesday, according to WFSB.

Trujillo reportedly crashed his car at a construction site, nearly running over an officer and suffering injuries, according to the Hartford Courant.

After being discharged from the hospital, Trujillo allegedly stole the Willimantic Fire Department rig, crashed it on hospital property and then fled on foot. He was apprehended by police officers about two blocks away from the hospital, officials say.

One officer sustained minor injuries after Trujillo allegedly fought with them before being arrested, according to police. The ambulance was taken out of service due to damage from the crash.

Trujillo was charged with first-degree larceny, intefering with police, first-degree assault on police and breach of peace, and held on a $100,000 bond.
