HOUSTON — The Houston Fire Department and Memorial Hermann celebrated the launch of Houston’s second Mobile Stroke Unit, making HFD the first municipal fire department in the nation to own and operate such a unit.

Equipped with a mobile CT scanner and telemedicine technology, the units allow medical teams to begin stroke evaluations and consult specialists before patients reach the hospital.

Both units were dedicated in honor of Dr. David Persse, recognizing his decades of service to emergency medicine in Houston, with his wife, Beverly, and daughter, Courtney, attending the ceremony alongside Mayor John Whitmire, Rep. Al Green, Rep. Lizzie Fletcher and Council Member Joaquin Martinez.
