In this week’s Inside EMS podcast, hosts Chris Cebollero and Kelly Grayson discuss the lack of funding for a community paramedicine program in Corpus Christi, Texas after the union filed a grievance with the city and caused the department to lose its $865,000 grant.

“I am just dumbfounded by the fact that the fire and labor end of the business wants to continually throw monkey wrenches in the work of transformation of our career field,” Chris said. “It’s really getting to be sickening.”

In the clinical issue, Chris and Kelly talk about the need for developing more specialized and continuing education courses for EMS providers.

“When we get through paramedic training, we don’t need an extra card to say that we know what we’re doing,” Kelly said. “It’s a merit badge enough to have a paramedic card.”

They also interview Jim Bonoyer, field supervisor with Escambia County EMS in Pensacola (Fla.), about how their department dealt with a mass casualty incident after a gas explosion rocked a jail in the Florida Panhandle, killing two inmates and injuring as many as 150 people.
