CARBONDALE, Colo. — A man seriously injured in a car crash allegedly confessed to a flight crew that he murdered his wife.
Police are investigating it as the city’s first potential homicide since 2003.
The man was injured when his Toyota 4Runner rear-ended an 18-wheeler empty cattle truck on Monday around 7:15 a.m., ABC Denver reports. He was transported to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, then airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. While in the air, he told the flight crew he wasn’t only involved in a car accident, but he had also just murdered his wife in an apartment building in Carbondale.
Investigators said all residents in the reported location were unharmed, and began searching other apartments in the area.
A woman arriving home wouldn’t let officers search her apartment, but agreed to check it herself and found a dead body.
Police say the victim had what appeared to be knife wounds, and did not say if it was the man’s wife.
The suspect is in protective custody at St. Mary’s Hospital, where he being treated for injuries.
