ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. – Hamilton Fire Chief David Haverdink, who previously served as Allegan County sheriff, has died after he was struck by a vehicle while at the scene of a medical call on M-40.
Haverdink, 74, had served with Hamilton Fire Department for 51 years, over 40 years as chief.

“Chief Haverdink is widely respected throughout all of West Michigan, serving on numerous boards and organizations, and providing outstanding service to citizens throughout the Hamilton Fire Department’s coverage area,” the fire department said in a statement.
“The family and the Hamilton Fire Department request peace, privacy, and prayer as they work through this deeply troubling time.”
He was struck around 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, on M-40 near 136th Avenue. He was taken by ambulance to University of Michigan Health-West in Wyoming in critical condition.
He died on Christmas Day. Police said early on that speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.
Haverdink, a businessman, served as sheriff from 1993 to 2000.
His brothers, Dale and Ron Haverdink, already worked at the sheriff’s department when David Haverdink ousted the long-time incumbent.
Funeral arrangements will be announced.
Brandon Hinz, chief of South Haven Area Emergency Services, on his agency’s Facebook page: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of the Hamilton Fire Department, as well as Chief Haverdink’s family and friends, during this difficult time. Dave was a great person and a highly respected leader in public service whose impact was felt throughout Southwest Michigan.”
Martin Township Fire & Rescue posted on Facebook: “We are deeply saddened to share the line-of-duty death of Hamilton Fire Chief David Haverdink.
“Chief Haverdink served the citizens of Hamilton and surrounding areas faithfully for over 50 years. His leadership and legacy was felt county-wide and we wish all our extended Family at Hamilton Fire and Chief’s immediate family strength and peace as they navigate this very difficult time.”
