S.C. EMS employee charged with arson in station fire

Two workers were inside the Marlboro County EMS building when the fire started, according to the sheriff’s office

MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. — A Marlboro County EMS employee has been arrested following a suspicious fire at a building on Nov. 12.

Hunter McDaniel has been charged with second-degree arson, according to the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.

McDaniel is accused of intentionally setting a fire inside the EMS building in McColl while on duty, using an electric heater and clothing as the ignition source, WMBF reported.

Two employees were inside the building when the fire started, WPDE reported.

During McDaniel’s bond hearing, Marlboro County lead investigator C. Bulusan spoke about the investigation.

“Local firefighters responded to a call in reference to a structure fire. What we call a fire that is on scene. They requested law enforcement respond out there, again to it being suspicious,” Marlboro County lead investigator C. Bulusan said. “I arrived there, and then that’s when I requested SLED arson unit to come and help me process the scene. After SLED also processed the scene. And after we interviewed Mr. Hunter, the man who SLED is already looking into for six other incidents. It was determined that we are going to charge Mr. McDaniel with arson second after his interview. In the evidence that we do have.”

Investigators and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are still working to determine a motive, noting the incident could have had far more serious consequences.
